Sonny Bill's night of Sham!

Yup... It's happened in Oz again... Another piece of boxing Sham!

It's a sport I love, so what happened the other night with the SBW/Frans Botha fight was an absolute travesty!!

How they can legally make the last 2 rounds of a 'so called title fight' just disappear, just doesn't sit well on the taste buds of the average punter who wants to see a fair dinkum fight.

I'll be honest, I was listening to Barry Michaels (a respected former World Champ) and his crew commentate on this and I had to turn the volume down. Basically I got sick of hearing comments like 'SBW is doing so well against such great quality opponent'...

Please, the guy was 44yo and people should be more concerned about him hitting them with his pension card than his fists!

In his day, Botha would have done away with Williams inside 4 or 5 rounds but his day was a long time ago.
All the media release from promoters and their press was about the opponents that Botha has faced in the past, Moorer, Tyson, Lewis, Klitschko all were fought 10 years or more ago... and more recently in 2009 he fought another ageing fighter who really shouldn't have been there Evander Holyfield.

The other thing they forgot to tell everyone was, every single one of those World Champs or former World Champs, KO'd him! (As you'll see when clicking on each individual name)

Now, let's move onto Quade Cooper... This is s fight I had heard the words 'Stitch up' about 1 1/2 weeks prior to the fight night.
Now, I will grant you that in your first amateur or pro fight all has to be even, in that they wouldn't have 2 fighters step in the ring who aren't of same or similar experience but ordinarily on a pro night, it wouldn't be your main support bout, unless both or at least one of the fighters had a decorated amateur career.

Again they Billed this fight as a big one though and told everyone that Barry Dunnett  was a great opponent... rah rah rah... You know the kind of crap I'm talking about. Again, as I said, as a first Amateur/pro fight, this is a fair match up but don't feed us the crap in between.

Basically, Cooper had his hands down near his ankles, and generally, boxed like an amateur in his first fight, which again is fair enough. The annoying thing about all this is, he has been paid a packet to fight his first fight just because he is a rugby star!!

Danny Green has been reported to saying how aggravating it is to the other, real fighters in the fight game, when guys like this, step into the boxing ring for the first time and get big purse fights, just because they're a big name rugby or rugby league star.

Danny, I fully agree mate, this is crap! there are real boxers, genuine hard workers around that have been doing the hard yards in the gym for so long, shedding the blood, sweat and tears, just waiting for the big money fight night, only sitting in their chairs at home watching this circus unfold right in front of them!!

Khoder Nasser hasn't gained any fans after this fight night I'm afraid.

I also believe that nights like this could make it very hard for the real fighters, like Daniel Geale, to entice the big names to come to Australia to fight. After watching this, I think that Geale will most rpobably resign himself to the fact that he may have to travel abroad for quality opponents and dollar...

Geale vs Mundine

IBF Middleweight title fight - Geale vs Mundine
Well it's happened, finally Daniel Geale has acted revenge on Anthony Mundine for his controversial loss to him in Brisbane in 2009.

I was one of the many who felt that Geale won it the first fight in 2009, but on this occasion Daniel Geale really danced rings around Anthony Mundine and fought a fight that no-one could ever get wrong!

Geale continuously spun Mundine in circles landing shots and disapearing before Mundine could even get an eye view of his positioning.

Mundine was visibly confused and concerned from the outset. He adopted and unusually wide stance, continuously propped his elbow up trying to keep Geale away from him and resorted to attempting to bore in thus forcing head clashes that he was quite obviously the instigator of!

Personally, I found it hard to see where any judge could have given Mundine any round of the 12 fought at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. As I said before I (and probably 90% of others) thought Geale won the first fight at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in 2009 but that was a closer fight and the judges could have that one scored closer... But not this one!

Geale always looked in control, always on balance and never ever flustered or concerned. In fact, after the fight he looked as though he could have gone another 12 to 15 rounds at the same pace.

My read on the fight was that Geale fought a very professional fight. Mundine never, from the very first punches, wanted to make the fight. So from that, Geale did what he had to, to win! In my belief, if Mundine had of actually come out from behind his corner to fight, Geale would then have gone the extra mile and knocked him out. But, why should he take unnessesary chances when your opponent is going to just hand it to you without a fight.

Just ask Manny Pacquiao about where taking chances gets you!

I remember Eveander Holyfield once being interviewed and him saying, 'If they come after me, I'll knock em out... If they don't, I'll just beat them!'

Now, what of Mundine's reaction?
I heard one reporter saying, 'His corner wasn't giving the right instruction!'
Let me tell you, your corner doesn't need to give you the right instruction in a fight as one sided as this one. He knew he was well beaten, that is why his reaction after the fight was like it was.

Jumping up like the victor up on the ropes!! that looked as fake as it could be!

Whinging about the judges scorecards!

Saying he punched Geale 12 times to 3... Where did that one come from? it was a 12 round fight Anthony, I reckon both of you landed more than those numbers put together!

Now the one that said it all 'I ain't giving that boy another payday!'... If that isn't an admission of who actually won the fight, then what is!?

To say those words like that say's to me that he knows he lost this fight, coz any other fighter who really thought he won it, would be wanting a re-match next week or even in the car park!

I had it 120-108 every round to Geale.. The judge that had it 116-112 must have been chatting up the ring girl coz where he found 4 rounds to give Mundine I don't know? and then the other 2 judges 117-111, again, I'd ask them to genuenly watch this one again and tell me where they could give Mundine 3 rounds?

Anthony Mundine's reaction post fight was deplorable! His mate Sonny Bill (who is fighting a 44-45 year old fat man who's well past it) needs to start thinking before he does... Wouldn't he get a shock if Botha decides to train for this one?!

I believe Mundine did have a good ability for an Aussie fighter, but I have never thought of him as truly World Class. Geale proved to me, he's on the verge of being an elite fighter... I sure hope he gets to win his WBA title, he was strpped of, back before he has to defend against Soliman, who shocked Sturm on the weekend (I'm afraid on another dubious decision).

I think Danny Greens description of Mundine was a classic and a laugh... so don't turn away until you see this, what a screem...
Cheers

Eat to lose FAT! & Get stronger! Teach your Children...

Firstly, while you read this, I want everyone to understand that even though I am writing the way I am about diet and lifestyle and how we should or shouldn't eat... I am not contradicting myself on my earlier article about 'Is Sugar Bad? Yes and No!'

I still believe in most foods are ok, as long as it is in moderation! The fact that people eat way too much bad is a problem they have to address themselves. It's not for them to blame the food but it's time to take a little of the responsibility on themselves as to how their lifestyle is.

In this following article, I am and will explain how we can let it get right out of hand. Just like the person in that '60 minutes' episode, we all start from a point, we just have to keep a check on it...

Anyway's, enjoy the read...

Ok guys, I know I said I would be going over different training techniques in the next few posts, and I will be but right now I have to talk a little about one of the major concerns that so many people worry about, the world over... What and How should I eat??

In recent times I had a real self assessment on my eating habits. My main reasoning for this was due to the fact that our boys were seemingly always wanting to eat treats and take away?!?!

With that in mind I remembered something that I had heard and learnt back in the early days of our boys life. Basically they learn everything from us! So...
  • When we eat bad, they eat bad!
  • When we eat the fast and easy way (this quite often the unhealthy way) they eat that way also.
This being the case, they then start to learn from us that fast food and treats are the way to go, 'cause they taste great!'
With this in mind, I decided to really assess how and what I eat... As a trainer, I can tell you it wasn't that great. It wasn't necessarily bad, it was basically missing a lot of the good stuff...

Basically there wasn't enough of the following...
  • Fresh Fruit
  • Protein
  • Salads
  • Vegetables
Let's just see what they generally look like...

Looks good hey? Not one Macca's rapper in sight...didn't get it from the drive through...it actually looks fresh, no-one told me 'it was freshly made', I know it is fresh!

Man, I could go on and on, but the realism is, it really does look like this when you buy it for yourself and prepare it at home.

Now back to my recent self assessment...

I was living life with the thought of... 'I'm a trainer, I'll be fine as long as I train and stay fit!'

How wrong an assessment can that be!!

Guys, just cause you exercise, doesn't mean you can go out, eat and drink what you want, and life will be ok!

It won't!... It all goes hand in hand!... Your body needs and requires exercise and good fuel - food.

Without the right fuel, your body won't get the...
...it needs...

Just because you're fit, does not necessarily mean you're healthy!

If you choose to eat and drink fast food's/fluids and don't think too much about what you put into your mouth, it will all come back on you one day.

Lets go over quickly - the essential nutrients...
    • Water - The body is made up of 40-60% water. doesn't it make sense you would ensure you drink plenty of water?
    • Carbohydrates - essential for fuel. Don't be fooled by the media, if you don't have Carb's, you will not function properly.
    • Fat (Fatty Acids) - Scary word, yes, but it is needed. But it is more the un-saturated fats we need. Certain Vitamins (A, D, E and K) rely on these fats so they can be taken up. It is much higher in Energy that Protien or Carbs. BUT, be careful which fats you consume, SATURATED  fats are to be taken up in very small doses. 30% of total calouries should come from fats (20% unsaturated just 10% saturated)
    • Protiens - Essential for building and re-building, all muscle in the body.
    • Vitamins - Work with metabolism, growth and development, regulation of cell function, prevent infections, important for our night vision and enable the body to clot blood. There are Fat-soluble and water soluble (water soluble vitamins need to be replenished daily).
    • Minerals - Split up into Major Minerals and Trace Minerals. Minerals are needed for bones, teeth, blood, normal heart rhythm, cellular metabolism and muscle reflexes. Minerals are found in the soil, root plants and animals.
    * If you click on to the links for the above nutrients, it will take you to - Food Pyramid (caring for your health) - I found this site to have the best and easiest description of the topics above. I really liked there site and the simple nature of their articles.

Now then... How do we eat it all?

The trick is to eat consistantly without over eating... What?!?
Yep, I know, up until now it sounded easy... and it still is!

The idea is to get in the required amount of the fore mentioned essential nutrients  throughout the day and exercise as well...

Your daily food/fuel intake should equivelate your daily energy expenditure. For example, my intake is higher than the average persons due to my high level of exercise expenditure.

For the average person though, who probably exercises 3 times a week, your intake will be a whole lot less than mine. The whole idea is to be sensible with your food/fuel intake.

My intake contains a wide spread type of food that includes such foods as fruit salad, yoghurt, eggs, tuna + crackers, baked beans, peanuts, vegetables and some form of meat. I space it out into smaller meals each day.

The average persons goal is to eat say like the following:
    Breakfast
    Morning tea
    Lunch
    Afternoon Tea
    Dinner

My advice is to give yourself 1 day away from normal eating habits... It's like a reward to yourself for being so good throughout the week and it is something to look forward too. The thing that ends up happening on your day away from normal eating habits is you will keep a certain amount of sensibilty in your food choices, this because you are bound to be enjoying the results and how you feel thus making the whole lifestyle easy to live by... Oh yeah, I now have fruit salad and yoghurt every morning and let me tell you, I really look forward to it every day and so will you. I look forward to my tuna on crackers and the rest of my diet.

It really is the way to live. So, take my advice and keep eating, just make it healthy...

Now... Back to the training techniques...
Next post due within the next 2 weeks...
    :-)
